Dear Friends
no sooner have the tankards been rinsed than, it seems, the immodest and unbelted Peachy presses presumptuously into the throng crying out “Look at me, everybody!” whereupon, with handclaps of delight and brief shrieks, an otherwise atomised aggregation congregates, hurls hats high and, for a moment, turns aside from the inexorable collapse of all that is solid.
Were that not enough, the ‘effect’ of the Peachy Coochy Nite ever burgeons. As if hailing from broken homes, the patrons of the Nites love to cluster closely, sometimes inadvertently draining the glasses of strangers whose arms they have raised to mouth height, such is the squeeze.
Here’s what Margaret said: “A man sat on my face and I forgave him because it was an accident owing to the squeeze.” (Margaret, 28/09/08)
And the Coocheurs! (“Ah, les Coucheurs!” (Fr.)) Unblinking, not ducking the hurled hats even, these winning, brash, bigboned, very much at home in their bodies, underweening, overwhelming, rounded volunteers pit themselves against the implacable scheme, those Princes and Princesses of PowerPoint!
Look what some bloke observed:
“Okay – you go in there and it frankly is very enjoyable.” (Carl, 2/10/09)
This is what you get:
David Gale’s Peachy Coochy Nites
The projector projects 20 images for precisely 20 seconds each. The Coocheur (or Presenter) speaks for precisely twenty seconds per image. Randomness is discouraged but narrative linearity is not automatically esteemed.
David Gale, having launched a nationwide performance must-have, continues to curate this series of Peachy Coochy events at ArtsAdmin’s new, stylish yet reassuring Bar. Each event features six Coocheurs, or Presenters, drawn from many walks of life. Each Coocheur will compose a verbal response to 20 images of their choice. Each presentation lasts 6 minutes and 40 seconds. There will be gaps between presentations for drinking and light conversation.
David, something of a Black Belt in these matters, will both compere and present the chunks that are at times discrete and at times indiscreet.
Here is an endorsement of him:
“He is usually fairly well groomed which I have to say makes a change.”
(Comment from ‘Comment Book’ )
Peachy Coochy Nites subscribes to the the National Belief System and is therefore committed to the provision of a wide range of contributors such as the practitioner, the cooper, the cubist, the archer, the poisoner, the dafty.
The next Peachy Coochy Nite will be held, as usual, in the Bar at Toynbee Studios on Thursday October 30th at 7.30 pm. Tickets £5.00. Booking advised but walk up welcome.
