Dear Friends
I was in Ipswich, just passing though, no particular business, when I saw Peachy sitting by the waterfront. “Good heavens, Peachy!” I cried, “Is this where you come in between?” Peachy, who was wearing garish clothing, said “After everyone goes home on Thursday evenings I walk along the Whitechapel Road towards the sea. When dawn breaks I make a rough hide out of things that I find.”
I gave Peachy a lift into London. Much of the time the Text and Image entertainment hung out of the window shouting things like:
“Peachy Coochy here! What do you think of my face?”
“Yes I am the hub!”
“Look to me for good times if you want!’
“I give big fun!”
“A Nite with me, a Nite with me!”
I reminded Peachy of the last time the Text and Image entertainment had done a Nite. I described the odd, simple light that lighted the faces of people who were there, delighted, as they saw it. I mentioned the way the crowd rippled and moved as the waves of variety swept across them. “That sounds about right,” said Peachy.
Another person not connected to it but there to see it said “There is much to be had.” (Evelyn, 29/10/08)
This is what you get:
David Gale’s Peachy Coochy Nites
The projector projects 20 images for precisely 20 seconds each. The Coocheur (or Presenter) speaks for precisely twenty seconds per image. Randomness is discouraged but narrative linearity is not automatically esteemed.
David Gale, having launched a nationwide performance must-have, continues to curate this series of Peachy Coochy events at ArtsAdmin’s new, stylish yet reassuring Bar. Each event features six Coocheurs, or Presenters, drawn from many walks of life. Each Coocheur will compose a verbal response to 20 images of their choice. Each presentation lasts 6 minutes and 40 seconds. There will be gaps between presentations for drinking and light conversation.
David, something of a Black Belt in these matters, will both compere and present the elements that, while irreducible, may strike one at times as connectible.
Here is an endorsement of him:
“On balance he gets through it .” (‘Laughter Bugle’ )
Peachy Coochy Nites subscribes to the the National Belief System and is therefore committed to the provision of a wide range of contributors such as the distributor, the hoarder, the lensman, the team, the loner, the socialite, the twerp.
The next Peachy Coochy Nite will be held, as usual, in the Bar at Toynbee Studios on Thursday November 27th at 7.30 pm. Tickets £5.00. Booking advised but walk up welcome.
