Dear Friends
Peachy Coochy, a text and image entertainment, is making his way down from Glasgow after a recent appearance. These text messages to his trainer shed light upon him, his qualities, his needs, his obduracy:
1. “I cannot hear you.”
2. “Now I understand.”
3. “I am in Carlisle. Come and get me.”
A car was despatched. Peachy was found in the transport drivers’ section of The Golden Fleece Service Station at the junction of the A6 and M6 in Cumbria:

An innocent in so many ways, he was sitting on the lap of Margaret, the partner of Keith, the latter a haulier. Other drivers were seated around. The atmosphere was convivial. Margaret was showing Peachy a page from the internet:
http://www.peach-tech.co.nz/peachey/familytrees/reubenpeachey1755/aqwn01.htm
Such was the open excitement of the unworldly entertainment that I had to intervene lest he grew insupportably restive.
I said “You have to realise that if you look up your name on the internet you will always find something. For example:
The Life of David Gale
He replied “Well that’s good isn’t it you’re him aren’t you?’
I said “No I am not”
He said “Well I am this person here on Keith’s laptop I simply am”
I said “No you’re not”
He said “Yes I am”
Keith and Margaret very kindly agreed to drive the intermittently exasperating entertainment to Toynbee Studios in London. They will drop him off in time for the next Peachy Coochy Nite.
This is what you get:

David Gale’s Peachy Coochy Nites
The projector projects 20 images for precisely 20 seconds each. The Coocheur (or Presenter) speaks for precisely twenty seconds per image. Randomness is discouraged but narrative linearity is not automatically esteemed.
David Gale, having launched a nationwide performance must-have, continues to curate this series of Peachy Coochy events at ArtsAdmin’s new, stylish yet reassuring Bar. Each event features six Coocheurs, or Presenters, drawn from many walks of life. Each Coocheur will compose a verbal response to 20 images of their choice. Each presentation lasts 6 minutes and 40 seconds. There will be gaps between presentations for drinking and light conversation.
David, something of a Black Belt in these matters, will both compere and present the morsels that, while passing the palate all too quickly, come to constitute a right spread.
This was said apparently:
“Many of the things said lasted more than twenty seconds – I felt soiled.”

Dear Friends
Peachy is coming down the road again, sweeping aside the cabbage patches and darned socks of new Austerity Britain. In these straitened times, when neighbours pass a single cup of inevitably cooling tea from house to house, often carried by an undernourished but songful child, preferably one that doesn’t like tea, well, Peachy can be a tonic – the garibaldi biscuit pressed between two little-read books, unearthed unexpectedly during a thorough cleaning.
“Hello, Peachy!” cry the belt-tightening dwellers. Peachy is banging his drum, not especially skilfully, and marching along. His legs are pale and thin, he wears satin shorts cut quite high so that you can see his pants underneath. He is wearing yellow football socks and the kind of sandal that you can’t tell if they are from a charity shop or Totnes in Devon.
These are some of the things the people said as he banged by:
“He is debonair!”
“He cuts quite the dash!”
“Is he sly?”
“What is that playing quizzically around his mouth and eyes?”
Peachy is, of course, on his way to Toynbee Studios, whereto he will walk from his hide in Essex by the sea where he goes in between. When he gets there he will meet his trainer and cooperate with the Peachy Coochy Nite.

Dear Friends
I was in Ipswich, just passing through, no particular business, when I saw Peachy sitting by the waterfront. “Good heavens, Peachy!” I cried, “Is this where you come in between?” Peachy, who was wearing garish clothing, said “After everyone goes home on Thursday evenings I walk along the Whitechapel Road towards the sea. When dawn breaks I make a rough hide out of things that I find.”
I gave Peachy a lift into London. Much of the time the Text and Image entertainment hung out of the window shouting things like:
“Peachy Coochy here! What do you think of my face?”
“Yes I am the hub!”
“Look to me for good times if you want!’
“I give big fun!”
“A Nite with me, a Nite with me!”
I reminded Peachy of the last time the Text and Image entertainment had done a Nite. I described the odd, simple light that lighted the faces of people who were there, delighted, as they saw it. I mentioned the way the crowd rippled and moved as the waves of variety swept across them. “That sounds about right,” said Peachy.
Another person not connected to it but there to see it said “There is much to be had.” (Evelyn, 29/10/08)

Dear Friends
no sooner have the tankards been rinsed than, it seems, the immodest and unbelted Peachy presses presumptuously into the throng crying out “Look at me, everybody!” whereupon, with handclaps of delight and brief shrieks, an otherwise atomised aggregation congregates, hurls hats high and, for a moment, turns aside from the inexorable collapse of all that is solid.
Were that not enough, the ‘effect’ of the Peachy Coochy Nite ever burgeons. As if hailing from broken homes, the patrons of the Nites love to cluster closely, sometimes inadvertently draining the glasses of strangers whose arms they have raised to mouth height, such is the squeeze.
Here’s what Margaret said: “A man sat on my face and I forgave him because it was an accident owing to the squeeze.” (Margaret, 28/09/08)
And the Coocheurs! (“Ah, les Coucheurs!” (Fr.)) Unblinking, not ducking the hurled hats even, these winning, brash, bigboned, very much at home in their bodies, underweening, overwhelming, rounded volunteers pit themselves against the implacable scheme, those Princes and Princesses of PowerPoint!
Look what some bloke observed:
“Okay – you go in there and it frankly is very enjoyable.” (Carl, 2/10/09)

Dear Friends
It’s that Effortless Second Season!
Bronzed and relaxed subsequent to its time in the bask, David Gale’s Peachy Coochy Nites kicks off again on Thursday September 25th at Toynbee Studios.
Following a crowd-crushing First Season in which dozens of Coocheurs (see below) displayed poise, ingenuity, disdain, selfishness, charm and an intense desire for personal development, the merciless Peachy Coochy format is now imposed on a fresh succession of showoffs on a monthly basis.
An expert on human nature said this of the First Season :
“What struck me in particular was the sheer passion of the Coocheurs as David calls them. I saw bare souls and raw psychic contents.” (Susan, 27/06/08)
Another person, known for his odd, distant and disconnected manner said this:
“I went along and it was all right, actually.” (Hugh, 29/06/08)

David, something of a Black Belt in these matters, will both compere and present the vignettes that strike one at times as coterminous at other times as having very little in common. It is wrong, however, that David should talk about his qualities so let others comment on his stewardship:
“He seems to like to show off his French accent at times.”
” It is clear what has to be done and he does it.”
